Taking Your Disability to School in 2018

As summer ends and school goes into session, understanding what to do about your disability is very important. Both parents and kids can relieve stress for the upcoming school year by properly going about your kid’s disability. I hope my three tips for starting off the school year with a disability can help families manage their kid’s disability this school year.

Have a Game Plan:

Before the school year begins, it’s good to set a game plan for the school year. Whether it’s with your family or friends, you can talk about what may need to be done in case something may occur with your disability. From creating emergency contacts in your cell phone to putting your medical information in your phone. These little things will keep you safe when you’re at school and give you a sense of comfort too. All my friends knew what to do when something happened to me, and all my medical information was in my phone for emergency situations.

Communicate:

From the first day of school to the last, be sure to communicate with your family and friends if something doesn’t seem right. The best thing I ever did was telling my friends about my seizures. They immediately wanted to help me every day, and it gave me a sense of comfort when I was at school. It may seem daunting but telling your story to your best friends will open up many doors. If something doesn’t feel right, let your family and friends know right away.

Have Fun:

If you don’t have fun in school what good is it? Yes, you may have one of the toughest battles anyone may face, but never let that hold you back. Your family and friends are always there to pick you up when something may go wrong. I’ve experienced many rough patches in my school years. I owe a big thank you to the friends that helped me up, and family that gave me faith to keep fighting the battle. You have to understand that you’re not alone by any means.
